Guide for Non-EU Citizens Seeking Seasonal Work in Italy in 2025
Seasonal Worker Conditions:
For non-EU citizens aiming to work seasonally in Italy, there are specific requirements to meet before arrival:
- Work Authorization and Visa: Before entering Italy, you must obtain a work authorization and a seasonal work visa. Italy uses an annual quota system to regulate the number of non-EU seasonal workers.
Application Process:
- Work Authorization:
Your prospective employer is responsible for applying for your work authorization at the One-Stop-Shop for Immigration in the relevant province (Prefettura) where you will be employed. Approval is granted based on Italy’s annual non-EU worker quota. - Visa Issuance:
Once the authorization is approved, Italy’s embassy or consulate will be notified and will issue your visa. You have six months to collect and use this visa to enter Italy, starting from the date of authorization. This work authorization is essential for securing the entry visa. - Residence Permit:
After arriving in Italy, you must apply for a residence permit at the One-Stop-Shop for Immigration at the Prefettura within eight days. Visa fees are generally €116, and residence permit fees vary:
- €40 for stays of 3-12 months,
- €50 for stays of 12-24 months,
- €100 for long-term permits (highly skilled workers and corporate transferees).
Additional administrative costs include €30 for mailing, €16 for a tax stamp, and €30.46 for permit issuance.
Required Documents:
To apply, you will need to sign a residence contract (in Italian) and provide a valid passport and other travel documents.
Validity and Renewal of Permits:
- Work Authorization: Valid from 20 days up to nine months, depending on your job duration.
- Residence Permit: Issued for the duration and purpose specified in the visa.
- Renewal: Seasonal work permits may be renewed if there are new seasonal employment opportunities.
Appeals:
- Visa Decisions: Can be appealed within 60 days at the Regional Administrative Tribunal.
- Residence Permits: Appeals can be made to the Regional Administrative Court or the State Council if necessary.
Rights of Seasonal Workers:
- Change of Employment: You may extend or renew your permit if you find new seasonal work, either with the same or a new employer.
- Change of Status: If you’ve been employed seasonally for at least the last two years, you can apply to switch to an employment residence permit, subject to quota availability. This process involves submitting a signed employment contract from your employer to the One-Stop-Shop for Immigration.
Family and Long-term Residence:
- Family Members: Not eligible under seasonal work permits.
- Long-term Residence: Not provided for seasonal workers.
